Chapter 01
Before the Storm
Verdant loved the forest before rain: leaves turned pale sides upward, and the air smelled of bark and mint. When thunder sounded above the treetops, the grey cat met Moss and her two kittens near an old oak. They were heading for a dry shelter beneath its roots.
Verdant walked the family to the entrance and checked there was room inside. The kittens insisted they were not afraid, though they pressed together at every rumble. The keeper smiled and promised to return after checking the forest. Soon the rain hid the sound of his paws.
Chapter 02
The Fallen Pine
When Verdant returned, he stopped short. A nearby pine had fallen across the entrance, pressing against roots and earth and leaving only a narrow gap. Moss called from inside: everyone was safe, but they could not get out. Branches creaked overhead; waiting beneath the trees was dangerous.
Verdant set his shoulder against the pine. It did not move. Then he noticed a soft strip of moss where the oak roots grew farther apart. If he cleared the soil, the kittens might be able to crawl through. Moss would need more space, so they would have to work together.
Chapter 03
Lights in the Moss
Lightning lit the forest, and the darkness seemed thicker afterward. Verdant scraped away wet earth until he uncovered a small stump covered in mushrooms. They glowed pale green, as if someone had scattered moon crumbs across the bark. Even the rain could not put those little lights out.
Verdant pushed a loose piece of glowing bark toward the gap. Now Moss could see where to dig from inside. The kittens swept soil away with their paws and piled it in a corner. 'We have an underground star,' one whispered. Moss laughed, and the work felt easier for everyone.
Chapter 04
A Narrow Passage
At last a paw appeared between the roots. Verdant widened the opening and helped both kittens out. Moss squeezed through after them, but tangled roots caught her at the edge. Verdant held a branch aside while she freed her fur. A moment later the family stood together in the rain.
A stone overhang on the hillside was close, but wind bent young trees across the path. Verdant led them away from old branches. Moss carried the tired kitten, while the other stayed close to her paws. When thunder split the sky again, the keeper stopped and waited for his little companion.
Chapter 05
After the Rain
Under the stone overhang, Verdant gathered leaves from the sheltered hillside, and Moss made a bed. The kittens stopped shivering and fell asleep against her. The grey keeper stayed at the entrance, listening as the rain quieted. At dawn a thin golden stripe appeared through the clouds.
Later they returned to the oak. They left the fallen pine where it lay and chose a place farther from old trees for a new shelter. The kittens found the glowing mushrooms and asked Verdant to tell the story again. He settled beside them, and his little listeners drew close: now they had an underground star of their own.
