Chapter 01
The First Rooftops
Every morning, ginger Atlas walked the rooftops before sunrise. He knew which tiles kept yesterday’s warmth, where to shelter from rain, and which chimney made the wind whistle loudest. The cats called him the rooftop guardian, though Atlas considered himself an attentive neighbour.
That day, dawn hid behind thick fog. On the next roof, grey Mira stared anxiously into the white distance. Her little sister Lika had gone looking for her red scarf the evening before and still had not returned.
Chapter 02
A Voice in the Fog
Atlas asked Mira to wait by the tall chimney and call if Lika appeared. He followed a familiar route, testing each wet tile with his paw. Fog hid even the roof edges, making the city feel strangely new.
Suddenly he heard a thin ring, then a quiet meow. Atlas called back, and a voice answered from the fog. Lika sat on an old tower’s roof. Her scarf had caught on its weather vane, and the narrow wooden bridge between the roofs had shifted in the night wind. She was afraid to cross back.
Chapter 03
A Bridge over Empty Air
Atlas was frightened too: beneath the bridge, fog hid a deep courtyard. But one end of the plank still rested on the tower, while the other was caught at his roof’s edge. If he pulled it into place and secured it, Lika could cross. First he called her away from the edge and waited until she moved back.
He lay flat, hooked his claws over the plank and pulled. It slid towards him, and Atlas pinned it with a heavy clay pot by the chimney. Then he crossed carefully, checking that the bridge did not wobble under his paws.
Chapter 04
The Weather Vane’s Song
Lika pressed close to Atlas, but she did not want to leave without her scarf: Mira had knitted it for her from yarn the colour of autumn leaves. The weather vane was high, but one red end hung almost as low as the attic window. Atlas climbed onto the wide sill, caught the scarf in his teeth and tugged gently.
The fabric came free, and the weather vane rang three different notes. Tiny bells were hidden inside, sheltered from rain. Lika laughed in surprise. Atlas laid the scarf over her shoulders and went first, showing her the way across.
Chapter 05
The Warm Side of Morning
Halfway across, Lika stopped. Atlas did not hurry her. He sat at the other end and told her how he had once been afraid of his first big jump. Lika took a deep breath, then one more step, and another. By the time she reached the roof, Mira was already running towards them.
The sisters held each other for a long time as the fog began to thin. At last the sun rose above the buildings, turning Atlas’s fur the colour of copper. Mira shared a warm breakfast with him, and Lika showed him her scarf and promised not to search the dark rooftops alone again. Above the city, the weather vane rang softly, as if wishing everyone a good morning.
