Chapter 01
A Letter at Dawn
Every morning, Sol the white cat rose above the mountains to carry letters between cat villages. He knew the gentle air and the winds that tickled his whiskers. That day, an older cat named Mira was waiting at his door with a paper packet tied with a blade of grass.
Inside were seeds for rare blue flowers. Cloud Valley kittens had prepared a garden, but the seeds had to be planted after the snow melted and before the evening rain. Sol tucked the packet carefully into his satchel, checked its clasp, and promised to deliver it in time.
Chapter 02
A Stubborn Wind
Sol took off as lightly as a tuft of down, and soon jagged peaks lay beneath his paws. At his usual pass, a sharp, cold gust met him. It pushed him sideways, and a second gust rushed out of the gorge behind it. Snow swirled above the rocks, though grass flowered below.
Sol tried to climb higher, but the wind shoved him back. He landed on a broad ledge, held his satchel under one paw, and watched. The gusts might carry him far away, and he could not lose the seeds.
Chapter 03
A Clue in the Sky
As Sol rested, an unusually shaped cloud floated past: it looked exactly like a sleeping cat with one round ear. It stretched into a ribbon and drifted along the mountain. Snowflakes near his ledge moved the same way, though wind still raged over the pass.
He remembered what Mira had once told him: every mountain has a quiet side, if you give it time to show itself. Sol waited for the gust to ease, then glided carefully after the snowflakes. A narrow current caught him and carried him along the sunny slope.
Chapter 04
The Last Climb
The quiet current led Sol into a great stone bowl. Beyond its rim he saw Cloud Valley, but the air had almost stopped. The white cat began to lose height. He landed below and caught his breath, listening to the dry grass rustle.
Near the far wall of the bowl, the grass was stirring upward. Sol ran, leaped into the warm air, and spread his paws. At first he rose only a little; then the current grew stronger. His heart pounded, but he held his course until he cleared the rim. Below, the others were waiting.
Chapter 05
A Garden in the Rain
Sol landed beside the garden just as the first drop touched the ground. The kittens carefully opened the dry packet, and Rue, the valley's gardener, showed them how to tuck the seeds just beneath the soil. Working together, they finished planting before the heavy rain began.
Under a shelter, Sol warmed his paws around a cup of herbal tea and listened to the drops patter on the roof. A few weeks later, blue flowers appeared in the earth. The kittens sent him a drawing of the garden, with a round-eared cloud in one corner. Sol hung it by his door, where he could see it before every flight.
