Chapter 01
Rain at the Gate
Nocturne loved the city after sunset. Windows glowed, tram rails shone, and rain tapped on the tin roofs. The black cat was hard to see in the dark, but he noticed much: an open gate, a lost mitten, a cat afraid to cross the street.
That night he was patrolling a courtyard garden when he heard an angry gurgle. Water was gathering around the garden beds. Two kittens shivered on a bench, while Mint, an elderly striped gardener, struggled to lift a box of seedlings. Soon the water would reach the greenhouse door.
Chapter 02
A Plug of Leaves
Nocturne helped the kittens onto a wide windowsill beside Mint and promised to return for the box. He dipped a paw into the cold puddle by the drain. Leaves, twigs, and a round red lid were wedged between its bars. The current held the lid tight.
He pulled with his claws, pushed with his shoulder, and tried a stick. Nothing worked. Rain grew heavier, and lamp reflections drifted across the puddles like little yellow fish. Nocturne did not get angry with the lid. He listened: beyond the courtyard wall, someone was moving empty flowerpots.
Chapter 03
Neighbors Wake Up
It was Plush, the ginger cat who watched over the bakery next door. At Nocturne's call, he hurried over with his long wooden dough spoon. A white cat named Willow followed with strong twine. Together they tied it to the spoon and slipped the spoon under the lid.
Nocturne braced his paws against the wet stone and pressed. The lid rose, but the current pulled it back. Willow suggested clearing the leaves farther up the courtyard first. While she and Plush swept them into heaps, Nocturne held the spoon. Little by little, the water loosened its grip.
Chapter 04
A Way for the Water
“Count to three,” Nocturne said. On three, Plush pulled the twine, Willow lifted the lid with a scoop, and Nocturne pressed the spoon. The lid popped free and landed on his head. The kittens laughed from the windowsill, and he bowed in his new red hat.
Water swirled above the grate and rushed down the drain. At the greenhouse door it stopped rising and began to retreat. The cats cleared the bars until the water flowed smoothly. Then Nocturne carried the seedlings to a dry shelf inside. The tiny green shoots had survived.
Chapter 05
A Warm Light
When the rain eased, Mint brought everyone warm milk and towels. Plush wrapped the kittens in the biggest towel, and Willow hung the twine up to dry. The greenhouse smelled of earth and mint leaves. Beyond the glass, the city shimmered in puddles, but the water was quietly draining away.
Next morning, the neighbors put a basket over the drain to catch leaves. Mint washed the red lid and hung it at the garden entrance, a reminder of the night everyone came to help. Nocturne smiled and set off home. The city had become a little safer and warmer.
